I’ll Not Allow Uhuru to be Intimidated -Gachagua
Democracy for the Citizens Party (DP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has made it clear that he won’t stand by and let former President Uhuru Kenyatta be intimidated.
During a press conference on Tuesday, February 10, Gachagua accused President William Ruto and his administration of attempting to silence Uhuru.
He alleged that Ruto was sending lesser-known politicians to threaten Uhuru by hinting at the withdrawal of his security detail after his criticisms of the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Gachagua emphasized that he feels a strong duty to protect the former President at all costs.
“I refuse to let Uhuru Kenyatta be intimidated. I have a responsibility to defend our son and kinsman from this region.”
“They’re trying to scare him into thinking he shouldn’t have a free political mind, engage with other political leaders, or make his own choices. If he dares to do so, they threaten to take away his retirement benefits and allowances,” he emphasized.
The leader of the DP party stood up against those attacking Uhuru, asserting that they lack the moral authority to criticize Uhuru Kenyatta, whom he referred to as a statesman deserving of the highest respect.
“I really don’t believe Kenyatta would abandon his constitutional duties just for some allowances. He’s not struggling financially. He’s a Kenyan who has worked hard to earn his wealth, and I don’t think anyone can silence him,” he remarked.
Gachagua promised that if the United Opposition wins the 2027 General Elections, they would restore Uhuru’s severance package, especially if Ruto and his allies continue with their threats.
The former Deputy President argued that the ongoing attacks on Uhuru stem from the Head of State’s anxiety over the inevitable unity of the Mount Kenya region.
Ruto is in disbelief, feeling confused and panicked because ‘Wamtam’ is actually happening. The Mount Kenya region, which once rallied behind him, has now turned its back.
He had hoped to convince Uhuru Kenyatta to help him split the Mountain’s votes when he visited Ihaweri, aiming to prevent the region from voting as a single bloc.
Gachagua confirmed that Uhuru is collaborating with other regional leaders to ensure unity as they approach the 2027 elections.
He also urged Ruto to stop pointing fingers at his predecessor for the difficulties he’s encountering during his time in office.
The Deputy President’s party leader reminded Ruto that he has created his own mess by failing to deliver on the promises he made during his campaign.
Several leaders aligned with the Head of State have repeatedly threatened to cut off Uhuru’s retirement benefits, accusing him of politically betraying his former Deputy.
Ruto’s personal aide, Farouk Kibet, even went so far as to threaten to halt the payments to the former President.
