Ruto Spoils Truphena Tree-Hugger
President William Ruto on Monday welcomed environmental activist Truphena Muthoni to State House in Nairobi, praising her remarkable commitment to environmental conservation and climate action. The meeting came shortly after Truphena successfully completed a gruelling 72-hour tree-hugging challenge in Nyeri County, an act that has drawn national and international attention to the importance of protecting nature.
Truphena’s latest feat marked her second attempt at breaking a Guinness World Record for the longest time spent hugging a tree. Earlier, she had already made headlines after completing a 48-hour tree-hugging challenge, which positioned her as one of Kenya’s most visible grassroots environmental champions. Her determination to push beyond her previous achievement has been widely applauded as a powerful statement on the urgency of environmental conservation.
During their meeting, President Ruto described Truphena’s action as a deeply symbolic and courageous gesture aimed at raising awareness about climate change and environmental degradation, both in Kenya and across the globe. He noted that such personal sacrifices help bring environmental issues closer to the public and inspire communities to take responsibility for protecting natural resources.
In recognition of her efforts, President Ruto appointed Truphena Muthoni as an ambassador for the government’s ambitious 15 billion tree planting campaign. The President said the appointment was a reflection of her courage, resilience, and exemplary leadership in advocating for a greener and more sustainable future.
“As a mark of national honour for her outstanding contribution to environmental stewardship, I have conferred upon Truphena Muthoni the Head of State Commendation (HSC) Medal,” President Ruto announced. The prestigious award is given to individuals who demonstrate exceptional service and dedication to the nation.
Beyond the national recognition, the President also revealed additional incentives aimed at encouraging Truphena’s conservation journey. The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), in partnership with the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB), has offered Truphena and her team a fully sponsored holiday experience. The gesture is intended to celebrate her achievement while also exposing her to Kenya’s rich biodiversity and conservation efforts.
Furthermore, President Ruto stated that the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry would support Truphena’s long-held dream of visiting Brazil. The trip is expected to broaden her exposure to global conservation initiatives, environmental leadership, and best practices in climate action, particularly within the Amazon region.
Truphena’s story has resonated with many Kenyans, especially young people, as a reminder that individual actions can spark meaningful conversations and drive national movements. Her journey highlights the growing role of citizen-led initiatives in supporting Kenya’s environmental goals and addressing the challenges posed by climate change.
