Driver Drains Lecturer’s Bank Accounts
Kenya’s former middle-distance runner, Mike Kipsugut Boit, shared a troubling story in an Eldoret court about how he was conned out of Kshs. 1.4 million by his driver, who accessed his various bank accounts in Kapsabet and Eldoret three years ago.
During his testimony, the 76-year-old retired Professor of Exercise and Sports Science at Kenyatta University explained that he had trusted his driver, Kevin Kipruto Lagat, who had secretly figured out his M-Pesa PIN and was just waiting for the perfect moment to raid his accounts.
While speaking before Eldoret Chief Magistrate Dennis Mikoyan, the retired professor revealed that he had enough faith in his driver to let him handle a money transaction on his mobile phone right in front of him.
The court was informed that Boit visited the Naiberi police station in Ainabkoi sub-county to report the incident and also provided a statement.
Boit explained to the court that he had hired Lagat to drive him from Nandi Hills to Nairobi for some work, paying him daily since it wasn’t a permanent position.
The professor surprised everyone in the courtroom when he revealed that his driver had used the mobile phone of a person who passed away 15 years ago to fraudulently transfer money to the deceased’s phone number.
Lagat faces accusations of unlawfully and fraudulently accessing Boit’s KCB account, from which he transferred Kshs. 550,304 that belonged to Boit.
Court documents indicate that the accused is also charged with unlawfully accessing another KCB account in Nandi Hills and transferring Kshs. 480,000 that belonged to Boit.
Represented by Lawyer Tecla Tum, the accused allegedly committed these crimes on various dates between December 23, 2023, and January 27, 2025, in Eldoret City, Uasin Gishu County.
The court has officially adjourned the case until January 26, 2026, to allow more time for the presentation of additional evidence, witness testimonies, and thorough cross-examination during subsequent hearings.
