The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has announced that it has launched a thorough investigation into the tragic death of former Cabinet minister and ex-Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, who sadly passed away from injuries sustained in a serious road accident on the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway.

In a statement released on Monday, the DCI confirmed that the crash took place in the early hours of December 13, 2025, in the Karai area of Naivasha, involving Jirongo’s vehicle and a public service vehicle (PSV) bus operated by Climax Company Ltd.

Preliminary reports indicate that the accident occurred around 2:19 am, involving Jirongo’s car, which had the registration number KCZ 305U, and a PSV bus with the registration number KCU 576A.

The collision was described as a head-on crash, with the force of the impact pushing Jirongo’s vehicle about 25 meters from where the collision happened, while the bus came to a stop roughly 50 meters away.

In response to the incident, the DCI has assembled a multi-agency team that includes homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory.

“In line with its mandate, the DCI deployed a combined team of homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory, who visited the scene, conducted preliminary examinations, and secured key exhibits,” the statement signed by J.Kmarete on behalf of DCI boss reads.

A significant breakthrough in the investigation has come from the recovery and analysis of CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station, which is situated close to where the accident occurred.

According to investigators, this footage offers a detailed, minute-by-minute account of Jirongo’s last movements just before the tragic collision.

The CCTV reveals that at 2:18:40 AM, Jirongo entered the petrol station from the Nairobi direction but didn’t stop to refuel. Then, at 2:19:10 AM, his vehicle paused briefly at the station’s exit before making a right turn back towards Nairobi at 2:19:19 AM. Just six seconds later, at 2:19:25 AM, the footage captured the moment when the PSV bus crashed into his vehicle.

Detectives have since questioned the driver of the PSV bus, identified as Tyrus Kamau Githinji, who had previously given a statement at the Naivasha Traffic Base.

He has been released on cash bail while the investigation into the charge of causing death by dangerous driving continues.

“He needs to report to the Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22, 2025, for further police action,” Marete stated.

Additionally, statements have been taken from the petrol station’s night guard and fuel attendant, both of whom were on duty during the accident and provided firsthand accounts of what happened leading up to the crash.

The DCI has confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing, with the forensic team set to revisit the scene for more analysis.

Detectives are also retracing Jirongo’s steps before the accident, including gathering statements from people he interacted with earlier that night.

Among those being interviewed are individuals who were present at a meeting at the Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi.

Further analysis of the CCTV footage is in progress, and additional statements will be collected from passengers on the Climax Company Ltd bus and other potential witnesses along the highway.

Once investigations are concluded, the DCI said a comprehensive police file will be compiled and forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for perusal and legal guidance.

The Directorate also conveyed its condolences to the family, friends and relatives of Jirongo while assuring the public that the investigation will be conducted thoroughly, impartially and in strict accordance with the constitution and the rule of law.
