New Twist in Jirongo’s Death
As questions continue to swirl around the events leading to the tragic death of former minister and ex-Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, new details have come to light regarding his unexpected passing.
This revelation follows a statement from a security guard at a petrol station who shared fresh insights about the accident, which contradict the earlier version provided by the driver of the 65-seater bus involved in the head-on collision that took Jirongo’s life.
Ephraim Cheptek, the guard on duty at the petrol station where Jirongo had briefly stopped before the crash, disputed the driver’s claim that Jirongo was trying to overtake when he collided with the bus.
Cheptek, who witnessed the incident, noted that he was the only one alert at the time of the accident, which took place at 3 am. He emphasized that the circumstances surrounding the crash were quite unusual.
“At the time when he was crashed by the bus, I was the only person who was awake, and I clearly saw what took place,” Cheptek told journalists.
According to the guard, Jirongo pulled into the petrol station in a rather strange way, almost as if he meant to fill up his tank. However, he never actually got any fuel and just drove off instead.
“When he entered the petrol station, he slowed, and while he was about to refuel his vehicle, he again drove away and joined the road. So the way he approached the petrol station was unusual,” the security guard added.
Cheptek stepped up to deny the claims that the road was jammed at the time of the accident, emphasizing that the highway was actually calm and clear, with no traffic congestion on either side.
He also pointed out that there was no vehicle following Jirongo’s Mercedes before the crash, and that the supposed traffic only started to build up right after the tragic incident.
“The road was calm, and there was no traffic, and it was after the accident that other vehicles began lining up, causing a traffic jam on this road,” said Cheptek.
Cheptek’s account, however, sharply contradicts what the driver of the ill-fated bus has claimed. The driver had previously stated that the politician was coming from a petrol station when he spotted a heavy traffic jam in his lane and decided to overtake.
On Saturday, December 13, the driver maintained that the accident could have been avoided. He mentioned that while he did see Jirongo’s vehicle trying to overtake, there was simply no way for him to escape, which led to the head-on collision.
“When I tried to save him from crashing into my vehicle, I felt the possibility of my vehicle rolling over, so I stopped and let him ram into my bus. When the police came, it is when i learned that the victim was Honourable Jirongo,” the driver stated
