More details on GSU officer killed
The National Police Service (NPS) has shared more information about the heartbreaking incident that took place near State House in Nairobi on Monday, October 13, which led to the tragic death of a General Service Unit (GSU) officer.
According to their statement, the event unfolded around 8:10 a.m. near State House Gate D, when a man armed with a bow and arrows launched an attack on the officers stationed in that area.
“A 56-year-old man, armed with a bow and arrows, rapidly approached police officers stationed in the area. Despite being challenged to surrender, the suspect advanced on Police Constable Ramadhan Mattanka and shot him in the left ribs with an arrow.
“General Service Unit (GSU) officers on duty swiftly subdued and arrested the assailant,” the statement read.
According to the NPS, attempts to save the officer’s life were in vain, as he sadly passed away from his injuries while undergoing treatment.
“The injured officer was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, where he, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. His body has been transferred to the hospital’s mortuary, pending a post-mortem examination,” the statement added.
In their statement, the police strongly condemned the attack and commended the officers who acted swiftly to avert any additional harm.
“The National Police Service condemns this heinous act and commends the officers for their swift response, which prevented further harm. An investigation is ongoing to establish the motive behind the attack,” the statement further read.
The NPS also expressed heartfelt condolences to the family and colleagues of the fallen officer, honoring him as a devoted serviceman who lost his life while serving his duty.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late Constable Ramadhan Mattanka, who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.
“The officer’s next of kin have been notified, and the Service stands in solidarity with them during this difficult time,” the statement concluded.
This comes months after 12 people were intercepted and arrested while attempting to breach State House.
In the incident that happened on Monday, March 10, reports indicate the arrests were carried out by the Recce Squad, who prevented the group from gaining entry into the premises.
According to eyewitnesses, a tense standoff ensued before security forces managed to apprehend the individuals.
Additional reports indicated that the 12 people who were arrested have since been released.
The group is said to have harassed and robbed some motorists and pedestrians in the 3 PM drama.
The group, which consisted mostly of youth from slums near Eastleigh and Industrial area, was confronted by the elite security team as they tried to breach security to ‘meet the president for lunch’.
