Drunken Spree Ends in Jail
A Nairobi man has found himself on the wrong side of the law after what was supposed to be a night of celebration turned into a costly nightmare. Qurine Omondi Muteshi will now spend two months behind bars or pay a fine of Ksh.30,000 after failing to settle a hotel bill amounting to Ksh.22,760.
According to details presented in court, Omondi got credit under false pretenses on October 3, 2025, at a popular restaurant in Vibanda Village, Upper Hill, Nairobi County. The prosecution told the court that the accused walked into the establishment in high spirits, ordered food, water, and several rounds of drinks for himself and his friends, and partied deep into the night. When it came time to pay, however, he vanished, leaving the shocked staff with an unpaid bill that had ballooned to nearly Ksh.23,000.
Omondi was later arrested and charged with obtaining credit through deception, a crime punishable under Section 316 of Kenya’s Penal Code. Appearing before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina, the remorseful man admitted to the offense and pleaded for leniency.
In his mitigation, Omondi confessed that he had been celebrating a personal milestone and lost control of his spending after alcohol clouded his judgment. “I had some money, so I called my friends to celebrate,” he said. “But as the drinks kept flowing, more people joined in — especially ladies asking for rounds. Before I knew it, everyone had disappeared, and I was left alone with the bill.”
He further revealed that when he checked his phone the next day, he found suspicious loan deductions from several mobile apps, suggesting he may have taken quick loans while intoxicated. “I was shocked to see how fast the debts piled up,” he told the court, adding that life in Nairobi had not been easy.
“This is my fourth year in the city, but I’m still trying to find my way. I ask the court to forgive me as I work to repay what I owe,” he pleaded.
Taking his remorse and circumstances into account, the magistrate sentenced him to two months in prison or a fine of Ksh.30,000, hoping the punishment would serve as a lesson to others about the dangers of reckless indulgence.
