Mob Lynches Murder Suspect in Siaya
A man believed to be behind a string of brutal murders in Gem Yala, Siaya County, met a violent end after being arrested and later handed over to an enraged mob.
Charles Onyango, also known as “Kwa,” had been on the run for nearly two months before police finally caught up with him. He was arrested in the Kibos area of Kisumu County on Wednesday night after local residents tipped off authorities about his suspicious behavior.
According to police reports, the 40-year-old had been disguising himself as a herdsman while seeking casual work in the area. His intention was allegedly to lay low and avoid detection while law enforcement intensified their hunt. Officers from Yala and Kisumu worked together to track him down and arrest him without incident.
Gem Yala Sub-County Police Commander Charles Wafula confirmed that Onyango was linked to a series of killings that had shocked the region. His victims were mainly women and schoolgirls, and the nature of the crimes had left the community living in constant fear. The arrest brought a sense of hope and relief to many residents who had been desperate for justice.
However, the situation quickly turned chaotic on Thursday morning. As news of his arrest spread, a large crowd gathered outside Yala Police Station demanding that Onyango be handed over. Despite the dangers involved, officers eventually gave in to the mob’s pressure.
In a disturbing turn of events, the crowd took justice into their own hands. Onyango was dragged to the Yala boda boda stage, where he was beaten and lynched. His body was later set on fire in full view of the public.
The incident has sparked concern over rising cases of mob justice in the region, with many calling for more robust community policing and faster judicial processes. While some residents say they now feel safer, others worry that bypassing the legal system may fuel more violence in the future.
